Contribute an Assignment to the Undergraduate Written Assignment Collection Project

In an ongoing effort to study undergraduate student writing, the College Writing Programs is undertaking a research project to collect written assignments from faculty teaching undergraduate courses throughout the campus. The purposes of this research are to gain an accurate sense of the range and types of writing demands that students face in their undergraduate careers at Berkeley and to develop a collection of assignments that can be used to guide faculty in their work with students.

To generate the largest, most representative collection, we are asking faculty members across campus to send us a copy of the written assignment(s) they give in the undergraduate courses they teach. By written assignments, we mean any coursework, formal or informal, that asks students to document their observations, arguments, research and the like in written text. These might include but are not limited to short responses, essays, reviews, research projects, position papers, essay tests for in-class or at-home completion, evaluations, lab reports, abstracts, case reports, and proposals.

Please send assignments, including your name and the class, in the form of email attachments to wac@berkeley.edu; word or .pdf versions of assignments are most helpful. Faculty who contribute assignments will receive a copy of the final project report.

If you have questions or suggestions, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Gail Offen-Brown (gob@berkeley.edu) or Caroline Cole (cmcole@berkeley.edu).

Thank you very much.

Note: This project is ongoing and the deadline for submitting materials has been extended indefinitely.
